Music Video inspirations- Miss Georgiou

There are three music videos which I have watched and all three can bring different elements to our own music video when we make it. These ways vary and can be anything from the location to the artists representation which we would like to use for our own artists , which is Tame Impala. These inspirations will help our group as if I take inspiration from a very successful music video then it will be more likely to be just as good. Furthermore with our genre we can use nearly any techniques as unconventional and conventional things are used in the genre of psychedelic rock. This means we can take a range of the best techniques which will make our video much more interesting than a video with limited use of video techniques.

Music Video 1-  Bastille - Pompeii

There are many ways that music video Pompeii by Bastille has inspired the music video which we are making with another song. One inspiration from this video which has been a big inspiration has been the location of a empty city. I believe this brings a sense of mystery to the video as it is relateble to the audience as many people live in one however the emptiness makes it so distant from a normal scene which they could expect to see. Furthermore this could work very well with our video as we feel the song Pompeii is similar to the song in which we have picked so could have connections between the location and the song.

A second point in which we would like to emulate in our own video is that the video is both narrative and performance based. I would like to use this in the video as we can make the song easier to understand for the audience and yet we can still show them the artist of the song performing which the record company wants . Also with our song this would be appropriate as it is psychedelic rock , so we have used the performance to be typical of the rock genre and the narrative for the psychedelic genre which is again the norm for the genre.

Finally I also would like to use editing in the form of special effects to do something similar to what Bastille did with the main characters eyes. This brings a big impact with a small amount of special effects as it contrasts with the relatively normal scenes which have been seen. This is very effective and we could easily do this with our video yet it makes it stand out so much. Furthermore this brings another aspect to our relatively normal video and as we have a psychedelic genre it could be seen as conventional to the genre.

Music Video- 2- One Republic- Counting Stars

Again we like the location of a abandoned place , this time in the form of a warehouse which is falling down, as it again takes a relatively normal scene and makes it into a very ominous one. This is very effective as our video is also about making a relatively normal scene into a extraordinary one as our genre is psychedelic rock which is about a different point of view. Furthermore our song is about going backwards, so we could do the opposite of this video and mend something that is breaking.

The iconography used is also a point that we would like to use in our video and take inspiration from Counting Stars, mainly as it is very unusual for a music video. Things such as a crocodile which is in the video could fit in with our psychedelic genre as it is very uncharacteristic and yet things like a guitar and drums can also be used for our rock genre. This would make our video unique and yet conforming at the same time which is what we would be maiming for with our own video as it is a unique song in a very unusual genre of music. If we were to use unusual iconography in our video it would also be good to use the normal location with the unusual iconography as it makes a normal scene seem very unfamiliar.

Furthermore in this video the editing is fast which we would like to include in our own video, this will keep the video moving and create a good balance between narrative and performance. This will also help the audience keep interest with the video and want to keep watching it. This will keep the audiences interested with the video and keep the flow of the video fast enough to make it engaging for the audience.

Music Video- 3 Arabella

One point from this video that we would like to add to our video is that the whole music video is in black and white. This makes the video stand out from others as most music videos use the most eye catching effects and colours possible to try to stand out to the audience. This effect would work especially well with our video as the music itself is very unconventional and unique and bright colors in a music video may take the attention away from the music which would not be good. Also the unusual feature will connect with the genre as psychedelic rock is very unique with its videos and does things that would not normally be seen.

Another point we like about this video is the use of iconography which fits in with the genre we have picked and its artists representation. The iconography used is things like beer bottles , guitars , cigarettes and drums which all represent the rock genre , and as our video is somewhat part of this genre we could use it and possibly change it slightly for psychedelic rock. Furthermore it would help with the image if the artist as we have a genre of psychedelic rock which revolves around having a good time and partying and this can be seen in many ways such as the location in a abandoned house. Overall I would like to incorporate these things as they would be very representative of our own genre and make it interesting enough to keep watching.  Furthermore as we have a relatively similar genre so we can take the best techniques and implement them in our own video which will both be conventional and unique to the genre.

Music Video 4- I got U - Duke Dumont  Editing

There are many editing techniques that are in the music video "I got u" by Duke Dumont which have influenced me and given me inspiration in the making of my own video. One of the things being the speed of the editing which is fast throughout the video and keeps the music video flowing which keeps the audiences interest in the video. We can see this in the way that the man  jumps into the swimming pool at 0.56 and is transported to the sea with the fish swimming around him. This will keep our music video interesting to the audience as things are constantly moving and their is constant action, furthermore the editing will match the themes of the song which is about time. Furthermore the fast editing is conventional to the genre of psychedelic rock as many of the video are unique and very extreme.  The fast editing will also keep the focus on the song and music and not the video as with a slow video the imagery is much more a part than with a faster video, this will keep people interested in music over the visuals.

Another editing techniques is the use of the straight cut which is used extensively in the video to make scenes go from one to another, which can be seen at 1.18 where it goes from the man walking in the jungle to him on the back of an elephant and then at 2.16 when he goes from a small room to a city. We have used this in our video as our own character is walking around and we can use the straight cut to move the scenes along and tell the narrative to the audience. Furthermore it makes our video look much better as otherwise we would have many shots of excess things that do not need to be involved. I will be taking influence from  both of these editing techniques as they will be both conventional to the genre, and make our video look much better.

Brianstorm - Arctic Monkeys

Throughout the music of Brianstorm their are many editing techniques which I will be taking influence from, one thing being the colour tints that are used at certain points in the video such as at  2.25 which has a yellow tint over the dancers. In our own video we will be using this technique as the man in our video has taken narcotic drugs so we are using this as a way in which we can show the audience what he can see through his eyes. This is also conventional of our genre as they often use very bright tints to give a unique look to videos.
Furthermore it would catch the attention of the audience and keep them interested in the which will help them to watch the whole of the video and remember the song.

Another editing technique which I would like to use is the point of view camera, which would be often in our own video. This can be seen in their music video at 1.25 and is used to show what the artist is looking at , this is how we would be using the angle in our own video. I want the audience to see what the artist is looking at and as we are using an iconic location it would be very interesting for the audience to watch , and when the man is on narcotic drugs we can see the effect that it has on his balance and what he is looking at. This would be very visually impressive for the audience and would help the video become memorable and they would be more likely to buy the music. This would improve our video and make it a better video for the audience to watch and improve the quality of the editing in my own video.

Applying for Music Copyright- Miss Georgiou

Applying for Copyright

The UK copyright,Designs and Patent act of 1988 is the law which stops people copying material that has been made by someone who has copyrighted it. The reason an artist or record label does this is so the owner has exclusivity of the material and can take all the profits and recognition that goes with it, and they can decide who they let the material out to in which they can make royalties. Or they could also give it to another artist to change which would bring a new element to the song which may make more money for the owner.

The reason that I had to apply for copyright is that it would be illegal if  I was to use their video without their permission. If I did not I would be in breach of their copyright. The video which I would upload to Youtube would also likely be taken down, and we could possibly be prosecuted by the owner of the song. So to get copyright permission we researched the record label that our band Tame Impala belongs to,  which is Modular People record label based in Australia. We then emailed the company asking for permission to use their bands song in a educational way which would not be used for anything other than personnel use.  3 days later we got a response from them which was encouraging and outlined the ways we could and could not use the material. The rules were outlined clearly and included things such as that the song can only be made private on Youtube and not public so only the examiners can see it.

This will help us very much with the planning as they have been encouraging and we know the outlines of what we need to do. This will mean making the music video will be much easier as we know what to do and that we just need to start filming the video.

Analysis of a Star and Dyer's Star Theory- Miss Miller

Miley Cyrus

There are many reasons as to why artists may feel the need to reinvent themselves. One reason is that they want to change the genre of music that they play, for example if an artist wanted to change from R&B to rap they would have a very different lifestyle and image. Furthermore if the artist wanted a different target audience then they would have to change their image, such as if they wanted to appeal to a wider audience they would have to be less controversial which would be appropriate for children.  Or it could simply be that they are bored of the genre that they are in and want to re invent themselves as something else which would appeal to a new audience.

Miley Cyrus has changed dramatically from a teen pop star to a more adult promiscuous pop star in a very short amount of time. Her songs when she first started were much more fun and light hearted than when compared to her later videos which are much more sexualised. The three of Miley Cyruses songs which I have picked areThe Climb 2009,  Party in the USA  2010 and Wrecking Ball in 2013. This is because her target audience has got older , and she is just catering for that , going from the themes of friendship, to parties and then to relationships.

One of Miley Cyruss first videos after she had left Disney was " the climb" a country pop song which is very conventional to the genre. For example she is playing a guitar which is conventional of country music , however would be seen as unconventional for the pop genre. The way she is dressed is also typical of the country genre , with her wearing jeans and a blue top with converse trainers, again this would be unconventional of pop as normally they would wear a bright outfit that matched with the song. Her target audience for this song is younger teens to middle teens, and she is relying on her past audience from her Disney career which she can bring to her music. This will also be an audience who will likely buy more merchandise than many other groups from their artist.  This results in the video being very conventional and so not very controversial as it is intended for a younger audience and so would have none of the themes featured in her later videos. The age range for this song could be from the ages 13-18 as it is aimed at a relatively young audience.

Goodwings theory can be seen in many ways in this video, for example the lyrics and the visuals connect with each other. When she sings " The dream I am dreaming" the background becomes a blur like a dream and special effects are used to make the background become dream like. Or when she sings " it will be a uphill battle " she is singing on a hill, connecting both visuals and lyrics. The needs of the record company are also met in that there are many times in which there are close ups of her face to indicate to new audiences who the artist actually is. Also again she is the main thing in the shot with her being in the center and at the forefront, this also shows she is the artist.

Miley Cyruss song "Party in the USA" is very conventional when we compare it to the dance / pop genre that the song is in. For example there are many people dancing and drinking at a party and having a good time, this is very conventional for this type of video as the songs in this genre are about having a good time. This also is reflected to the audience in that it feels the same as if you were there with the artist at a party. This is a typical video of her earlier Miley Cyrus when she had a strong following from younger fans and so her videos were not very extreme and were not offensive or controversial to anyone. This is in the middle of her transition where she was becoming more edgy with more sexualised behavior. At this point her target audience is mainly middle teens to late twenties, which can be explained through the party environment. The exact age range would be from 14-24 as it has limited adult themes yet does not go deeply into party themes such as drinking or sexual behavior.

This song also follows Goodwins theory in many ways, for example lyrics linking with visuals when she sings the opening " when I hopped off the plane at L.A.X" she is at an airport  which is has a direct connection. Furthermore when she sings the chorus " party in the USA" everyone in the background is seen having a good time and dancing with friends. The demand for the record label is also met consistently, there are many close ups of Miley Cyrus face which immediately shows the audience who the artist is and that she is the most important. Furthermore this is helped as she is central in the shot nearly all of the time and sometimes standing higher than everyone else,  which shows the audience that she is again most important in the scene. However again we can see that the image of her has changed as the audience which she is targeting has got older, the people she wants to target now want to go to party's unlike the younger audience with the previous video.

Miley Cyruss later song " Wrecking ball" is very unconventional in many ways when it comes to the genre of her song which is pop. One way we can see this is that there is no dance routine which would normally feature in a pop video along with dancers. She is also not wearing an outfit and is just wearing casual clothes which is again very unconventional of the pop genre. Lastly her video is quite extreme which is not conventional for the normal pop genre, the target audience of this music genre is normally includes younger people which this video may be unsuitable for. Therefore parents may not be comfortable with their child watching the video which does normally happen with the pop genre. So Miley Cyrus may lose fans as her song is not suitable for her previous audience from her previous image. This songs target audience is middle teens to early twenties , although it may still be inappropriate for middle aged teenagers, the exact ages could be from 15 - 30 as it is simply too explicit with too much sexual behavior for any younger ages. This song has a slightly older target audience than the previous video as it has more of a party theme than the last song which had the themes of friendship and love.

Other ways in which this song follows Goodwins theory can be through the music and visuals, when Miley is riding a wrecking ball into a wall the level of sound of the song increases and the tempo gets faster. This is to make the chorus of the song have more impact and for the audience to pay more attention. Another way this can be seen is when she licked a sledge hammer the song slows down and the tempo decreases. This could also be seen for the lyrics and visuals , for example when she sing " I came in like a wrecking ball" she is riding a wrecking ball into a wall. Lastly the video does follow Goodwins theory through the way that the music video is split between performance and narrative, which is common for the pop genre. One point we can see narrative is when she is on the wrecking ball, then we can see performance when she gets off and starts to sing.

The three videos show how Miley Cyrus's image and style has changed dramatically over a relatively short period of time. In one of her first videos "the climb" she is very simple in her dress and her song is about a relationship and the song is very uncontroversial. Her target audience at this point is young teens to middle teens and so must be suitable for a relatively young audience. Her second video " Party in the USA" is aimed at an older audience and so the theme of this is  party, this is a small transition from her earlier video about relationships and feeling. There are people dancing , drinking and having fun so this is aimed at middle teens to early twenties which make the environment more acceptable for the age range. Finally "Wrecking ball" is the most controversial in many ways and is a huge transition from her very early videos. In this she is wearing revealing clothes which are very sexualised and doing things some people would see as inappropriate such as when she licks a hammer. The target audience for this is older teenagers and early twenties as it is possibly to much for a younger audience. The change between her first video has been huge as she has become a adult and sexualised artist from a Disney star, this has made it so controversial. However it could be that she has had the same fans and that as they have got older she has catered for their music tastes as they mature. Furthermore with this the image of the star has changed as they are now marketing to a different audience that they were when Miley Cyrus was younger and targeting people from her previous Disney career.

The message and values have also had a massive change from her first video, in her first video it is about relationships and feelings and being in a dream land. This could not be further from her new videos such as wrecking ball which is again about relationships but has a sexual aspect which was not there before. The video during her transition is about having a good time and partying which has very little to do with the other videos. The values have also changed with over time her values becoming less conservative and more promiscuous than her earlier videos which can be seen in ways such as her clothing which is revealing. This could be due to her wanting to get rid if her child style type of music and lifestyle and becoming more adult and care free. This also does fit in with society with promiscuous behavior becoming more socially acceptable and so more things can be done in a music video which would be unheard of ten years ago.

This research has helped me greatly in understanding how important an artists image is because of the audience they are targeting . Without the image of certain artists then a certain type of audience will not be attracted to the music of the artist, this can be seen with Miley Cyrus and when she became much more promiscuous for an older audience which attracts them. Without this they will have an audience who are confused with the artist as they will be playing music that is not appropriate for them , such as Miley Cyrus having her young audience watching her extremely provocative videos would not be acceptable. It is possible that she has kept the same people as fans but they have just got older together and she has changed herself for her age.

Analysis of music genre- Miss Georgiou

Analysis of music genre

Music videos appeal to an audience in many different ways which depend on how the artist wants to present themselves to fans. For example the rock genre will represent themselves in a different way and have different characteristics to that of the dance genre.  Rock would have the characteristics of having low key lighting, a lifestyle with drinking and drugs and having a performance based video which would attract there fans. Whereas dance would have strobe lighting and the genre typically is set in a club with people having a good time which also attracts people to watch the video as it is suitable with the dance genre. All of these things would attract a different type of fan to the music that they prefer whatever genre it is. In this blog I will be discussing the characteristics which are in three videos Drake-Over , Flo Rida-Club can't handle me and the final song is  Why do you only call me when your high by the Arctic Monkeys.

Drakes music video over is in the rap genre which is about the topics of love in the rappers life and his feeling and emotions. This can be seen in many ways such as through cinematography the camera shots used, a close up is used many times throughout the video especially when he is sitting on his bed. This shows the emotion of the video and the emotions of the artist, and it shows how the whole theme of the song revolves around his feelings and what his life is like. This also connects to the lyrics at the time being about how he is alone at the time. This would make audiences want to listen to him as it is telling them about his past experiences. We can also see the lifestyle of the artist through the camera shots of the video, there is a mid shot used and we can see his bedroom and the clothes he is wearing and again when he is standing up in jeans and a jacket. Mise en scene through iconography is also seen in the video, the brands shown in this video are expensive and shows the lifestyle that the artist has. This will also appeal to the audience as they want to see his lifestyle and replicate it.  Finally a high angle is used on Drake when he is sitting at the end of his bed, this puts him in a weak and innocent position which is not normally represented in the rap genre, which normally makes the artist look powerful. This would appeal to the audience as it brings attention to the artist and is different from other rappers and will help the audience take pity on the man as he is in such a vulnerable position. The setting being his bedroom is also a very personal place, he is not in a mansion or in a club like other rappers, he is in his bedroom almost like he is inviting the person into his life. This will bring another sense of pity for the rapper as he seems vulnerable and weak.

We can also see the emotions of the video and how Drakes video conforms to the rap genre, it does this through the editing that is used in the music video, one example is the colour tints used when he is rapping in his bedroom which links to the lyrics that he is rapping at the time. When Drake starts rapping about how emotional and lonely he is the screen turns red and white light starts going around the room and across his face. This is showing his emotions particularly his anger when he is rapping about his past experiences which is often featured in rap videos, this will make his audiences want to watch more of the video as they want to hear what he raps about. Also this is the music and videos linking together with them both being about his emotions towards his life. Finally through editing we can see that when the rap gets more serious with Drake rapping about his emotions when he is standing up the editing gets faster. This shows that the rap has more meaning to the artist and he is angry and lonely due to the speed of the editing , which would be slower if he was calmer. This is a characteristic of the rap genre as rappers often rap about past experiences which are often about emotions and feelings which change the editing speed.

The music video by Flo Rida is Club "cant handle me" is in the dance genre of music. Through cinematography we can see that there are many close ups of  the artist in the video. This is because the record label wants to show new audiences who the artist is, and to publicize the artist as much as possible . Furthermore this is used to show the emotions of the artist at the time, which is Flo Rida having a good time in the club. This is typical with dance music which always has people having a good time in the videos. Furthermore there is a low angle used in the video which makes the artist look bigger and more powerful than the other people in the club. This is a characteristic of dance music as they try to make the artist stand out as much as possible, and making the artist seem impressive to the audience.  A part of mise en scene is another way that the video has the characteristics of a dance video is that it is set in a club and in a abandoned building, this i again frequently used in videos. This is frequently used as dance music is about having a good time with friends and dancing, and clubs is where this happens. It would be very unconventional if the video was set in a place such as a house or a street as it would not show off the lifestyle in which they want to portray.

The iconography which is a part of mise en scene is also very typical of a dance video, Flo Rida for example wears a big gold chain and a gold watch, furthermore he is drinking expensive champagne and arrives at the club in a Lamborghini. This is to show the lifestyle of the artist and the wealth that he has and how he flaunts it, this could also be used to promote it as a desirable lifestyle to their audience. This is a characteristic of dance videos as being wealthy is seen as a good thing and having a good time is what dance music is centered around. Finally through editing the strobe lighting that is used continually throughout the video, this is a characteristic of the dance genre. This is also used as it makes the scene more relatable for the audiences and creates the sense of realism when watching.

Why do you only call me when your high is a rock song released in 2014 by the Arctic Monkeys in their album AM. The video features the lead singe of the Arctic Monkeys Alex Turner walking home trying to get a reply from a girl. This is different from most of the other Arctic Monkeys songs.

Through iconography there are many thing that can be seen as conventional. There is the main item of a phone which is not usual of a rock, however there was alcohol which is typical of a rock song. This may be relatable to the audience as alcohol is part of every day life for people. The clothing that the artist wears is also very typical of the rock genre , he is wearing a leather jacket with a black t shirt and jeans. This may appeal to the audience as it is another way that they can relate to the artists. The artist also stands out as other people are wearing brighter colour clothes whereas he is dressed in black, this is very typical of the rock genre.Furthermore mise en scene can be seen in the setting in that it is the street and a pub , this is very conventional to the indie rock genre and brings across the lifestyle they want. For example if they were to set it in a expensive hotel it would not have the same rock feeling as a pub, this would also be unrelatable to fans of the Arctic Monkeys.

Editing is also a way that the rock characteristic of the genre can be seen, for example things change in the video such as the clock becoming a smiley face. This could be as he is either drunk or high, which is very typical of the rock genre as the point of the genre is doing whatever the artist wants. The audience may also like this as it changes the normality found in other music videos. Slow editing is used throughout the video however as the song is about a girl not replying and the artist is annoyed and depressed about it however the camera shots constantly change which keeps the audience interested in the video. The lifestyle that is portrayed in this video is one of drink, drugs and girls which creates a lifestyle that the audience wants to replicate whatever the consequences that may occur. However the video does not use expensive locations such as a beach or a mansion, just a normal bar and a road which keeps it relatable to the audience.

Overall I now have a much clearer understanding  of the specific conventions of different genres , and what I need to include in my own. My own genre would be indie rock which is most similar to the Arctic monkeys and now I know some of the conventions which I can take inspiration from. Such as using a setting which is relatable to the audience , and having themes of relationships, women ,drugs and alcohol. If I stayed conventional to the genre I could use these things , furthermore I could take inspiration from the surreal things that go on on the video such as the clock going backwards. Furthermore I know how to make my music video different and unconventional to the genre by changing the setting or making the artist wear bright clothes.

Research into Diversity - Miss Miller

Diversity

Why would an artist choose to have a diverse music video ?

There are many different ways in which a video can be seen as being diverse and unique to their audience. The main thing that can make a video diverse and unique is by not following the normal or expected characteristics of the genre of that specific video. For example if a dance music video was to have an unusual setting that was not a club, then it may not appeal to their typical audience but may attract a new one. This would be the same if a indie rock band had no performance in their video and was purely concept or narrative based. So the main way a artist can make their music video unique is by doing something that is not normally associated with the genre they belong to. The main reason that an artist will do this is to get more publicity with their video which will make them more successful and make more money for the record label and the artist.

There are also many positives and negative to making a diverse music video, for example one positive is that it can keep the audience entertained while watching the music video which makes the video easier to watch. However it may be too much for some people with the strange and unusual parts which may put people off and alienate them and the video may not be watched or be bought by many fans of the the artists. Another positive is that it makes the video more memorable for the audience , which will make them hopefully buy the music. This may also help them become fans of the artist and buy into the merchandise and lifestyle that the artist portrays.  Although it does not want to be memorable for something negative or shocking as this may do the opposite and make people dislike. Overall it could be both positive and negative depending on the video, and what genre of music it is in for example a pop video would be more mainstream while an indie video could be very unusual and diverse.

Chris Cunningham was born in Reading in 1970 and is a music video director of unique and diverse music videos for artists. Cunningham has done music videos with many artists such as Autechre and Aphex Twin and focuses mainly on the electronic and ambient music genre. However he has done videos outside his typical genre such as Madonnas video "Frozen" which won an award for special effects in 1998 at the MTV music awards. The most well known music videos that he has directed within his usual genre of electronic are Aphex Twins "Window Licker" and "Come to Daddy". Furthermore Cunningham was nominated for a grammy with Bjorks song "All is full of Love". Generally his music videos have lots of close ups of the artist face which help with branding the music video and help with a new audience in seeing the artist. Most of his videos also have some form of evil or unusual aspect to them which can be seen in many forms such as with the editing of artists faces.

We can see how unusual Cunninghams videos are in very unique and diverse through the ways he presents Twin Aphexs videos. Cunninghams video "Windowlicker" starts with two men in a car driving around swerving constantly while they are looking to pick up girls in their car. When they find two girls, there car is pushed out the way by a limousine which has a rich man inside. The most disturbing part is when the rich man gets out of the car he has the artists face edited over the body of someone else whilst he dances with the two girls. This video has both a performance and narrative base with the artist face being part of there performance.  His second video is far more diverse with "Come to daddy", where a group of children with the artits face edited on them run around an empty block of flats. Then after a short time a face appears in a broken Tv and tells the children what to do as they run around.  Both of his videos is also an adult video with the amount of swearing that is in it so would be unsuitable for most audiences and all music channels. His final video is with Madonna on her video " Frozen" which shows a woman who is having her life, soul and emotions being drained from her. This video is very dark and gothic with ravens flying constantly around and Madonna herself becoming a bird. This completely subverts the usual genre of pop which has themes of being together and normally has bright colours in the video to portray happiness. The audience may dislike this pop video as it is very uncharacteristic of the genre, however it may attract new people to see the video. This however supports the pop genre as her performance is performance based with a narrative alongside.

Michael Gondry is a academy award winning French music video director born in 1963. He has worked with many artists such as The White Stripes, The Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk. The artists that Michael Gondry have done videos which I have looked at are The White Stripes " Hardest Button to Button" and Kylie Minogues "Come into my world". Both of these videos do have the characteristics that rock for The white Stripes and pop for Kylie Minogue are meant to have and both feature the theme of repetition in the videos.

The White Stripes video "The Hardest Button to Button " is conventional to the music genre of rock which it comes under as it is performance based with the two artists playing there guitar, drums and singing in various locations such as on the subway in America. The main themes of the video is repetition with every beat the artists move and so the music, lyrics and visuals all match together with them all moving the video along. Furthermore there are many close ups of the artists which promotes them to the audience and helps the record label brand the artist. The video is very relatable to the audience as it is in familiar places and makes the artists seem more accessible to their fans. This is a typical video that has been made by Michael Gondry. The other song that Gondry has directed is Michael Gondrys "Come into my World" which is very conventional with the pop genre in many ways, however it does differ in some. For example there is no dance routine it is simply her walking around the same street, and there is not specific outfit it is just her in casual clothes. Furthermore it is not in a typical pop location such as a club or beach, it is set in a back street which could be in any city. The audience can also see that it is real through the inter textual references such as a smart car. This video is performance and narrative based as we can see she is singing, whilst she is walking round her world which is very normal and so relatable to the audience. Both of these videos could be played on a music channel as they are both not very offensive and have no offensive parts in there video. This would attract fans of the artists that have already seen the genre but will be unlikely to attract any new audiences.

There are both similarities and differences between both of directors, for example Gondry is much more moderate than Cunningham in language, visuals and the themes of the video. A difference between them is that Cunningham in his videos has the theme of evil and disturbing things whereas Gondry has the main theme of repetition which has lighter themes. However both videos use lots of editing and special effects which help to make the video more eyes catching to the audience.  Overall they both compare and contrast in many ways.

Overall we will be using a diverse music video as it fits into our genre of music which is psychedelic rock , which will make it conventional and would possibly appeal to a certain set of fans. However if we wanted to make the video more mainstream we could make the video less diverse which may make the video more popular overall. Although the genre we have picked has many fans so we will be conventional as we can take inspiration from other similar bands music videos to put into our own. Furthermore I believe that it will make the video more entertaining and engaging for an audience which will help them keep interest with the song. However we do not want to make it so extreme that people who are unfamiliar with the genre are put off and do not want to listen to this genre.

Research into music channels-Miss Georgiou

Research into music channels

MTV

The target audience of MTV is the ages of 11 to 30 and MTV have chosen this range as they generally  listen to the most music compared to older generations. Furthermore many of these people have the free time to listen as they are students and many spend a large amount of money going to live gigs. Also these people generally like the music that MTV play which makes the automatically like the channel and want to listen to it more. The music that MTV mostly play is the music that is in the charts currently and this mostly consists of  R&B with small amounts of other genres such as indie, MTV plays this as this is what their target audience wants  from their music channel and this has made it one of the most successful channels. If they played any other music then they would likely lose their audience as they focus on mainstream music which many people will like. Furthermore MTV also play this music as it helps keep them current and up to date which constantly attracts new audiences as people get older, other music channels such as VIVA do the same and they play similar music and have a similar audience. However MTV are the biggest music channel for the latest music and as they have a brand with a history they are arguably better, as they have done things such as live festivals, sister companies and many other television programmes on their channel .

There are many artists who regularly perform on MTV, one example of Rihanna who plays R&B and soul music. This fits in very well with the type of music that MTV play and Rihanna is an artist who they frequently play and there target audience are fans of Rihanna. One example of her music on MTV is "the monster"which features her and Eminem. A second artist that is played frequently is Beyonce, she also plays R&B music the same as Rihanna which fits well with MTV's genre of music, furthermore this also caters for the preference  of there audiences. An example of one of Beyonces songs that is played on MTV is " Drunk in Love" featuring Jay Z. A final artist that frequently is played on MTV is Eminem, although he is a rap artist he features in many songs by other artists. Although often his own songs are played on MTV, one song that is played on MTV is "Rap God" another song that he features in is " the monster" with Rihanna. These songs are very suitable in that they have a few themes of  adult which keep people attention , but are not too inappropriate for the audiences that they target.

MTV is a huge brand and is very powerful in the way that it has relations with new and successful artists who are very popular. This makes it very valuable for new artist who want to become more successful to try to be connected to MTV, this can make them much more successful. Furthermore the brand is very powerful with audiences recognizing MTV and having positive connotations with anything that is related to MTV. So MTV can charge lots of money for other artist and brands to use the MTV brand. The logo appeals to the target audience in many ways, it is a bold design that is very easy to recognize and is something that will look good on merchandise. Also there are many different colours used with the logo, there is the plain black and white , a red, yellow and blue design a pink and black design. This change appeals to the target audience as it uses bright colours which appeal to its younger audience. This change of design helps keep highlighting the logo to the audience and makes it better looking on merchandise which will make it easier to sell branded items to customers. Also the font that they have used is one that stands out from other brands fonts. This also makes it appeal more to their target market as younger people like to wear branded clothes with their favorite brands on them. All this helps to make fans interested in the lifestyle that MTV puts across with its music.

Kerrang

The target audience that Kerrang focuses on is the age range of 20 to 40 as most of the music that the radio station plays is from a wide range of years so they generally have a wider age range. This can be seen in the way that they can play an Oasis song from the early 90's, to a Arctic Monkeys song from 2014. Their target audience also like the station as it has music from when they were younger, this brings in older people who want to hear the music from when they were younger. Also younger people listen to the station as it still plays music that is new and from the latest bands. So Kerrangs largest target audience is the older generation as they play music from their past , however they also have a large younger audience as the station play a wide range of rock music.

Kerrang plays almost exclusivity rock music with a mixture of indie, alternative, punk, grunge and metal being played. The station plays this music as it appeals to a wide audience with a wide age range as many people like the type of music. This helps the station as they have more listeners and from this they can become a bigger and expand. We can see this has worked in that Kerrang has different online stations such as a 80's rock station and a 90's rock station.

One example of an artist that will regularly play on Kerrang is the band Arctic Monkeys, they play a mixture of alternative and indie rock which is exactly what Kerrangs target audience wants. So Arctic Monkeys have been playing on the station for years so they are popular with both old and new generations. An example of a song that is played is "R u mine" by the band which is indie rock. Another band that is new to Kerrang unlike Arctic Monkeys is the band Twin Atlantic, they play alternative rock and so are popular again with the stations audience however they appeal more to the younger audience. An example of a song is "Brothers and Sisters" which is alternative rock. A last band that is often played on Kerrang is Nirvana who are a band that plays grunge rock who are played frequently on Kerrang and its 90's internet station. They especially suit the older target audience as when they were a very big band in the 90's these people were likely big fans. An example of a song that is played on the station is "Smells like teen spirit" which is a grunge rock song. This pleases the targets audience of the channel and although it is varied is based around rock which is the prominent genre from all of the bands. If an artists who does not fall into this genre played for example Rihanna who is R&B they would likely lose listners as these people do not want to listen to this music.

The radio station of Kerrang is a very strong brand, they have 4 radio stations and they have their own magazine which they own. Many new bands have been discovered by Kerrang and they have gone on to be huge success, so if a band is endorsed by Kerrang they are seen as being able to become a success. Furthermore their magazine makes the brand stronger as they have another way in which they can reinforce the rock lifestyle to its fans. The logo appeals to the target audience in that it is very rock with black and white colours , also its font is scruffy which makes the station seem more related to the music it plays. This is memorable and easily recognizable

This will assist me greatly with my own video as I can see what each channel wants for their target audience, and which my own would fall under which would be the genre of indie rock. Through this I can see what type of things they use for example R&B music for the mainstream channels like MTV with artists such as Beyonce with the themes of relationships. I know what I need to include in my own indie rock genre video which I would like to do , such as the themes , other artists in the genre and what the conventions are. Such as with indie rock which would be played in Kerrang with bands like Arctic Monkeys and with themes of women.

Censorship-Miss Miller

Censorship Miss Miller

Many things are held back from general public viewing as the content is seen as being offensive or explicit. Companies can censor media by completely removing offense parts, blurring images, re-singing or bleeping out sounds to make them appropriate. The organisation that controls and regulates the UK censorship is Ofcom who control the television and radio. The main people who this is designed to protect is children who are deemed to young to be shown graphic, violent or offensive material which could damage them. However censoring is also put in place for adults who do not wish to be exposed to certain materials. Although there is the argument that if a child wanted to see offence material they could easily view it through the internet,  for example the artist Eminem when has younger listened to offensive material, which could be seen to have inspired him.

There are many reasons why the radio stations are for censorship in their songs, depending on their target audience. For example Capital FM who has an average viewer number of 7.1 million and has an audience made up of people 14-34. With such a young audience they would want to censor their songs as many of their viewers are younger than 18, and make up a large amount of their audience. An example of a song which was censored was by Eminem in 2000 with the song "The real slim shady" which had the lyric "Well I do, so fuck him and fuck you too!". One point is that with censorship radio stations will have a larger audience as younger people will also be able to listen without their parents limiting what they listen to you. If censorship was not included many radio stations which play the latest music would have a much lower audience as they rely on their younger target audience for much of their viewers.

Another reason is that they would likely have many more complaints from listeners than they would have if censorship was in place. As complaints would not help the brand image of the radio station this would be a negative thing. For example MTV do not play the word "suicide" as it may not be acceptable to some people for public viewing. However there are reasons as to why radio stations should not be censored. One reason is that they will have a much bigger selection of songs that could be played if there was no censorship, this would be especially helpful with rap and rock which often use offensive language.  This would please more listeners and would attract them to the radio station as they play a wider variety of songs. A second possible reason is that it may limit the entertainment value of the song if they are censored, so radio should not be censored as it may not live up to the expectations of listeners. Again an example with MTV is that they replace gun shot sounds in their videos as this could be seen as promoting violence.  If radio was censored then it would lose listeners as they would want to listen to the original version as they want to listen to what the artist meant there songs to be.

Artists can also be both for and against censorship depending on their personal opinion.. One aspect is that he freedom of speech of the artist is being limited with censorship in that they cannot say what they want. For example Eminem who uses extreme lyrics such as the use of the words "hoes" and "fucking", and believes that it is the parents responsibility for limiting what there children hear. This could upset the artist and the fans in that the artist cannot express his views and the fans cannot hear what the artist really want to say, due to a limited number of people being offended. Furthermore the artists creativity may be limited due to them not being able to use the words that they want. This may annoy the artist in that they may not be able to perform the songs as well knowing that they will be censored and the emotion will not be in the song. Another example is Rihanna with her song S&M which has the lyrics " chains and whips excite me" which can be seen as very inappropriate for young listeners,  However some artists may want to have censorship, a possible cause is that so they can have younger fans which can help their career. This will make them bigger than if they were only for a mature audience.  However this depends on the artist they are, a boy band such as One Direction will have no need for censorship whereas a band like Arctic Monkeys will due to their target audience. However most artists see that censorship is needed to protect children against certain music.

Parents can also be for and against music to be censorship. Some parents believe that censorship is needed, mainly due to them not wanting their children to be exposed to explicit or offensive. If their children were to have listened to offensive material then it could damage them and it would be the parents jobs to help them . Furthermore they could possibly replicate dangerous activities that they could hear, such things can be heard in songs. For example in a Eminem song he talks about "hanging himself" , which is clearly not suitable for children.  This could have easily been fixed if censorship was available  However the argument can also go the other way and some parents agree that it is the individual parents responsibility to limit what the child has access to , which eliminates the need for censorship. This is a popular opinion with artist as they want to have the creative freedom to produce whatever they want with their lyrics. However this can also be the problem as if something is censored and not allowed for the child then it becomes more intriguing and curious for the children. This would lead them to finding out what was censored anyway, which makes censorship seem pointless and as Eminem has said "I watched offensive stuff as a kid" and he wasn't allowed to watch it.

Fans:
With fans there is a big problem as they want to hear the artists music in the way that the artist intended
to, which would be fine if all of an artists audience was adult. However many artists have very young fans and they will be subjected to censorship normally, although if they went to see them at a concert or festival they would see their artist with no censorship. This is why festivals such as Glastonbury have an age limit of 16 if the people are unaccompanied by an adult, however many fans do not want children present as it may be a possible reasons or their artist to censor some songs.

Record Labels :

Overall all record labels are trying to do is make more sales and in turn more profit, from this they will want to have censorship as it will get the maximum amount of possible viewers. This may work with some artist who are aimed more towards younger audiences for example with a boy band like one direction , but with a rapper such as Eminem who uses personal experiences and very adult material it may not work. For example with his song Stan it has themes of suicide and domestic violence in the lyrics which are very unsuitable with younger people. However the record labels have allowed this as it is so personal to Eminem that they have a certainty it will sell, and that people will understand and not be offended. However it could be seen that record labels do not want censorship as this will keep their artists happy and they will be able to keep them longer and make more money from them. This would make it easier to market them for their target audience if they had creative freedom.

Overall it is clear that the stronger case is for censorship rather than against, with the main purpose in protecting children from things such as extreme language and inappropriate subjects. This also enables both the radio stations and artists to have a bigger audience which will benefit them both in making more money, however it does limit their creativity. Parents believe overall that it is the job of the record company to protect their children , however there are some exceptions. The only possible argument against is that it is the job of the individual parent to protect their children and not another persons responsibility. Overall I believe that censorship should be done by the parent and that eventually everyone will hear what was censored, and they can find it if they look for it. So in conclusion I will not be using censorship in my own video and we will have swearing if it is appropriate for the scene, but not use it unnecessarily.
