Applying for Music Copyright- Miss Georgiou

Applying for Copyright

The UK copyright,Designs and Patent act of 1988 is the law which stops people copying material that has been made by someone who has copyrighted it. The reason an artist or record label does this is so the owner has exclusivity of the material and can take all the profits and recognition that goes with it, and they can decide who they let the material out to in which they can make royalties. Or they could also give it to another artist to change which would bring a new element to the song which may make more money for the owner.

The reason that I had to apply for copyright is that it would be illegal if  I was to use their video without their permission. If I did not I would be in breach of their copyright. The video which I would upload to Youtube would also likely be taken down, and we could possibly be prosecuted by the owner of the song. So to get copyright permission we researched the record label that our band Tame Impala belongs to,  which is Modular People record label based in Australia. We then emailed the company asking for permission to use their bands song in a educational way which would not be used for anything other than personnel use.  3 days later we got a response from them which was encouraging and outlined the ways we could and could not use the material. The rules were outlined clearly and included things such as that the song can only be made private on Youtube and not public so only the examiners can see it.

This will help us very much with the planning as they have been encouraging and we know the outlines of what we need to do. This will mean making the music video will be much easier as we know what to do and that we just need to start filming the video.

  1. This post demonstrates some understanding of what the purpose of music copyright is and the role it has to creating a production.

Reflect on the response that you received from your record label and how this will help you with planning and creating your music video.
