Research into music channels


MTV


The target audience of MTV is the ages of 11 to 30 and MTV have chosen this range as they generally  listen to the most music compared to older generations. Furthermore many of these people have the free time to listen as they are students and many spend a large amount of money going to live gigs. Also these people generally like the music that MTV play which makes the automatically like the channel and want to listen to it more.The music that MTV mostly play is the music that is in the charts currently and this mostly consists of  R&B with small amounts of other genres such as indie, MTV plays this as this is what their target audience wants  from their music channel and this has made it one of the most successful channels. If they played any other music then they would likely lose their audience as they focus on mainstream music which many people will like. Furthermore MTV also play this music as it helps keep them current and up to date which constantly attracts new audiences as people get older, other music channels such as VIVA do the same and they play similar music and have a similar audience. However MTV are the biggest music channel for the latest music and as they have a brand with a history they are arguably better, as they have done things such as live festivals, sister companies and many other television programmes on their channel .







There are many artists who regularly perform on MTV, one example of Rihanna who plays R&B and soul music. This fits in very well with the type of music that MTV play and Rihanna is an artist who they frequently play and there target audience are fans of Rihanna. One example of her music on MTV is "the monster"which features her and Eminem. A second artist that is played frequently is Beyonce, she also plays R&B music the same as Rihanna which fits well with MTV's genre of music, furthermore this also caters for the preference  of there audiences. An example of one of Beyonces songs that is played on MTV is " Drunk in Love" featuring Jay Z. A final artist that frequently is played on MTV is Eminem, although he is a rap artist he features in many songs by other artists. Although often his own songs are played on MTV, one song that is played on MTV is "Rap God" another song that he features in is " the monster" with Rihanna. These songs are very suitable in that they have a few themes of  adult which keep people attention , but are not too inappropriate for the audiences that they target.


MTV is a huge brand and is very powerful in the way that it has relations with new and successful artists who are very popular. This makes it very valuable for new artist who want to become more successful to try to be connected to MTV, this can make them much more successful. Furthermore the brand is very powerful with audiences recognizing MTV and having positive connotations with anything that is related to MTV. So MTV can charge lots of money for other artist and brands to use the MTV brand. The logo appeals to the target audience in many ways, it is a bold design that is very easy to recognize and is something that will look good on merchandise. Also there are many different colours used with the logo, there is the plain black and white , a red, yellow and blue design a pink and black design. This change appeals to the target audience as it uses bright colours which appeal to its younger audience.This change of design helps keep highlighting the logo to the audience and makes it better looking on merchandise which will make it easier to sell branded items to customers. Also the font that they have used is one that stands out from other brands fonts. This also makes it appeal more to their target market as younger people like to wear branded clothes with their favorite brands on them. All this helps to make fans interested in the lifestyle that MTV puts across with its music.


Kerrang


The target audience that Kerrang focuses on is the age range of 20 to 40 as most of the music that the radio station plays is from a wide range of years so they generally have a wider age range. This can be seen in the way that they can play an Oasis song from the early 90's, to a Arctic Monkeys song from 2014. Their target audience also like the station as it has music from when they were younger, this brings in older people who want to hear the music from when they were younger. Also younger people listen to the station as it still plays music that is new and from the latest bands. So Kerrangs largest target audience is the older generation as they play music from their past , however they also have a large younger audience as the station play a wide range of rock music.

Kerrang plays almost exclusivity rock music with a mixture of indie, alternative, punk,grunge and metal being played. The station plays this music as it appeals to a wide audience with a wide age range as many people like the type of music. This helps the station as they have more listeners and from this they can become a bigger and expand. We can see this has worked in that Kerrang has different online stations such as a 80's rock station and a 90's rock station.

One example of an artist that will regularly play on Kerrang is the band Arctic Monkeys, they play a mixture of alternative and indie rock which is exactly what Kerrangs target audience wants. So Arctic Monkeys have been playing on the station for years so they are popular with both old and new generations. An example of a song that is played is "R u mine" by the band which is indie rock. Another band that is new to Kerrang unlike Arctic Monkeys is the band Twin Atlantic, they play alternative rock and so are popular again with the stations audience however they appeal more to the younger audience. An example of a song is "Brothers and Sisters" which is alternative rock. A last band that is often played on Kerrang is Nirvana who are a band that plays grunge rock who are played frequently on Kerrang and its 90's internet station. They especially suit the older target audience as when they were a very big band in the 90's these people were likely big fans. An example of a song that is played on the station is "Smells like teen spirit" which is a grunge rock song. This pleases the targets audience of the channel and although it is varied is based around rock which is the prominent genre from all of the bands. If an artists who does not fall into this genre played for example Rihanna who is R&B they would likely lose listners as these people do not want to listen to this music.

The radio station of Kerrang is a very strong brand, they have 4 radio stations and they have their own magazine which they own. Many new bands have been discovered by Kerrang and they have gone on to be huge success, so if a band is endorsed by Kerrang they are seen as being able to become a success. Furthermore their magazine makes the brand stronger as they have another way in which they can reinforce the rock lifestyle to its fans. The logo appeals to the target audience in that it is very rock with black and white colours , also its font is scruffy which makes the station seem more related to the music it plays. This is memorable and easily recognizable


This will assist me greatly with my own video as I can see what each channel wants for their target audience, and which my own would fall under which would be the genre of indie rock. Through this I can see what type of things they use for example R&B music for the mainstream channels like MTV with artists such as Beyonce with the themes of relationships. I know what I need to include in my own indie rock genre video which I would like to do , such as the themes , other artists in the genre and what the conventions are. Such as with indie rock which would be played in Kerrang with bands like Arctic Monkeys and with themes of women.
